Letterpress Postcard Series

Design Rationale

The design process begun with evaluating Greta Thunberg’s 2019 speech ‘How Dare You’. In consideration of the target audience, Millennials and Generation Z, I selected key quotes from Thunberg's speech which would define the postcard series purpose and intentions. The select use of short, direct quotes takes into consideration the younger generations need for easily accessible, quick and attention capturing graphics. The postcard designs express messages of activism through utilising visual hierarchies to emphasise the significance of typographic elements.

The use of large scale, block type and key words draws attention to Thunberg’s purpose to create call to actions and motivation among the receiving audience. With consideration of our materialistic and capitalistic ideals and Thunberg’s intention to inform and ignite change, the visually comparative forms are conceptually relevant.

The block type, accompanied by graphic mark makings forms a typographic voice evoking feelings of chaos and loss of control. The letterforms as conceptually “man-made” is juxtaposed by the mark makings fluidity and natural forms. Capitalism has been symbolically referenced through the black, white, and grey limited colour palette, various block typefaces and the technological manipulation of mark makings. The lack of colour featured symbolises the “future of no return” our society will experience as we continue to ignore warnings from the United Nations Climate experts. The comparative forms allude to Thunberg’s overall message of economic exploitation of finite resources is unsustainable.

The overall purpose of the series is to establish that there will be a ‘black and white’ outcome for our future. Each postcard from the series refers to the impacts our delusion, dismissal, and ignorance towards the reality that we are running out of time.
